Access provides the ability to create useful, data driven, business applications in less time and at lower cost than the alternatives.

Microsoft Access is more than a “database”, it is a Rapid Application Development (RAD) platform which, although tightly integrated with the Microsoft JET/ACE database engines, allows developers to connect to multiple disparate data sources, including Excel, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and others.

Access can be used to simply analyze data, but its real strength is the ability to create data driven applications ranging in scope from simple to very complex.  These applications generally take less than half the development time than alternative development environments (.NET, ASP, PHP, …).  Access also has one of the best reporting engines available.

As part of the Office suite, it is tightly integrated with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook and can be used to automate any of these other applications using the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
